You 100% would qualify as disadvantaged. This will help your application because you will bring a much different perspective to the medical field than many who come from an affluent background. That is how you should frame it. Brainstorm on how your life experiences give you a unique perspective than the majority of other applicants.

The most recent AAMC ranks "Parental education/occupation/socioeconomic status" as a medium importance rating. Link below

Best of luck in throughout your application cycle!

Yes they care about what happened during your formative years.

I understand your apprehension of self classifying as "disadvantaged" I had similar feelings when I checked the box. A large portion of those who are disadvantaged don't see that they are disadvantaged because it is all they've ever known.

Yeah that's exactly how I feel lol. Also compared to people like my cousin I feel super well off. At least I had one super solid parent. Both of his parents were drug addicts and he ended being adopted by a family friend.

Sorry to hear that and hope your cousin is doing better.

One video I saw posted on SDN awhile ago I felt explained things pretty well:

My disadvantaged status made those adversity essays easier to write. If you had a rough life, embrace what it was and acknowledge the fact that, despite it all, you’ve gotten yourself to a position to apply to medical school. How often does that happen?
