I'll preface this by saying that my school doesn't have NBME exams for pre-clinical years. I doubt it would help much for Step 1 because by the time you take the real test you've (hopefully) been exposed to the practice tests so many times that any additional exposure beforehand would not add much. I will say that it might be nice to have tests with a certain standard of quality - while I love my medical school, let's just say that there have been some test questions that should have gone under some more scrutiny during the editing process.

Getting used to the question style was paramount, imo.

I think NBMEs tend to overlap more closely with step 1 style and content than school-designed curriculums do. Studying each subject from boards&beyond and First Aid to prep for NBMEs, rather than studying lectures for exams written by the schools, will make it all more familiar when dedicated comes around. Probably pretty helpful.

My school had them and I would say it has been very useful. Although I am also inherently limited by the fact that I haven’t experienced the alternative.

I interviewed somewhere that utilized NBME test bank questions on their block exams.

Their scores skyrocketed after the change and are continuing to do so.

This is all very helpful color. Thank you! If NBME test bank questions are used on block exams does that artificially inflate you NBME practice exams that you take during dedicated or are schools purchasing questions from a separate question bank? Thanks for all the help!

It’s my understanding that the questions used are not commercially available, but I’m not sure.

I can’t like this enough. Every test it seems there are about 1-3 questions that are complete WTF questions on professor exams lol. Standardization would be nice.

Also this.

Hey are different questions so no they won’t inflate practice scores.

I would love to have NBME exams for my pre-clinical tests OP. Definitely something to consider if you have the option to do so.
