  • MCAT retake: 499 (124/124/124/127)
  • Graduated over an year ago.
  • 3.5 cGPA and 3.4 sGPA (a little higher than that but around those numbers)
  • Boatload of diverse leadership experiences and extracurricular activities, with multiple ones that I continued over the years
  • Started a nonprofit
  • Asian
  • State residency: VA
  • I'm fairly good at writing, and my PS went over well with some of my former adcom friends
So far, i'm applying to Howard (MD), VCOM, LUCOM, and ARCOM. Would love suggestions. I've also recently found out about NOVA which has both MD and DO schools...
Howard? That’s an odd choice. If you haven’t had loads of experience volunteering with African American communities...this school may be a bad choice. Don’t do NOVA, MD only cares about high stats, DO has some concerning academic issues.

I’d recommend: VCOM, PCOM, Rocky Vista, ICOM, UIW, ARCOM, Touro (not NY), LUCOM, and Seton Hall 🙂

Thank you so much for your response! I picked Howard because...it matched my stats and because one of my main passions circle around racism and discrimination and I've spent much time around my campus and community in a rural, white town trying to bring such issues to light, bridge barriers, and ignite open conversations.....eh, I'm not sure if I should withdraw now.

Thank you for enlightening me about NOVA. Where did you find info about the the MD school caring about high stats?

And thank you for the list. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to be applying so heavily to DO schools (although I had nothing against it) and am not familiar with DO schools besides VCOM and LUCOM. Do you suggest applying to all PCOM schools? You don't think my MCAT would screen me out? I didn't find any information about the MCAT minimum for PCOM...

In general, how would one best figure out the OOS acceptance rates and screening factors (if not explicitly stated)? Is it best to call schools? I didn't find any MSAR-similar lists for DO schools.

Also, what about Loma Linda? Their MCAT is 508 and GPA 3.8. I know that by comparing stats, it makes no sense, but I do come from a religious background with many years of service for the church.
These are all great questions....questions that I don’t have the answer to lol. For Nova, you can take a look at the 2017-2018 thread and see the stats for those accepted. Plus, I have similar stats to you, and was rejected in a heart beat.

As for the other DO schools, I don’t think you’ll be screened out with a 499. PCOM is absolutely amzaing! Apply to both campuses, but I especially recommend the one in Philly. Why? No reason 😉 As for Loma Linda, most likely you will be told to not apply. Do it anyway. If you really fit the school’s mission down to a T, I think it’d be worth it to see what happens

GPA okay. MCAT is low. Being ORM isn't going to help.
Apply to newer schools - ICOM, ARCOM, ACOM, RVU-Utah, MUCOM...

Honestly you need an MCAT retake to get above 500 to have a solid chance
Right now with your stats and app it's a shot in the dark

Good luck.

Nova MD is also brand new. Also, you’re post says “MCAT Retake: 499”. Do you have another MCAT score already?

  • Some bad grades (although I definitely own up to them) were definitely related to losing a beloved relative, which I will mention if necessary to schools

Forget Howard.

Apply broadly to DO schools, especially targeting the newest ones
