im an undergrad freshman who has never taken psychology before. I’m originally from Switzerland, so my English comprehension skills are a bit low. My teacher has exams that require critical thinking and language comprehension. No matter how hard or smart I Study, I keep on getting a B+. It is so frustrating working so hard and not being able to see results. Students who study less than me score better than me. The class is for premeds, so there is a lot of biological content in it. I’m pretty good at Biology and memorizing things, but using that knowledge in combination with psychology is very challenging. I’ve tried flashcards, study groups, going to TA’s, and having a meeting with my professor. All of it actually helps, but not to the extent I want t to be.

Please don’t tell me a B+ as a freshman is a good grade. I want to have as many A’s as I can have since I don’t know how my grades will turnout in the future.

Thanks in advance!

Seems like you already identified the problem. If language comprehension is holding you back then that’s what you need to work on. Go see the academic center/tutoring/International student center as available at your school for help.

Practice tests! It's absolutely one of the best ways you can study. Take as many practice tests as you possibly can! It will help you both with studying and comprehension.

I’m halfway through the semester and I need a quick help. I will improve my English comprehension for my next classes.

The teacher doesn’t release her tests from previous years, so it is unlikely that I will find similar exams as hers.

Any kind of practice testing will be helpful, not just the instructor's previous exams. Find out if there are practice quizzes associated with the text, and use those. If that doesn't work, or in addition, you can also get together a group of people and make your own practice exam questions for one another.

Take the B+ and be happy with it. We Adcoms don't like perfectionists. Even an F won't kill your medical school aspirations.

Well, the way you said this made it seem like I got all A’s and this is the only B+ I’ve gotten. I have four more years to come and I don’t know what’s going to happen. So, having an A at this point really matters.

But the fact that you said Adcoms don’t really want perfectionists made me feel better.

Thanks!

Are you not able to comprehend all the courses?
I remember my first chemistry test, I didn’t know what lead meant and I thought it was the verb to lead lmao, I talked to my professor and told her that if I didn’t understand something, I’ll ask her during the exam and she said yeah!
