If it's specified as a "merit scholarship" don't treat it as a need-based scholarship. Explain why you think you deserve it. What have you done to go above and beyond and make yourself a student they want to have in their class? If I were writing it, I would focus on what attributes and experience I have that I would be bringing into my MD class, and what I wanted to do with my medical education once completed that would make me a worthwhile investment for the scholarship.
