This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Go to nearby hospital(s) and offer to help as volunteer (if they allow you without app and all the medical tests), or go to your college health center to offer help...

I am an international student with no family in the U.S. I will be staying on campus this coming break for one month until January 15th. I have nothing planned except from sleeping. Do you have any suggestions of what I should do that is related to medicine? I don’t know any doctors, so I can’t find anyone to shadow.

Talk to your school about shadowing...my school has an office that will try to set you up with a local doc if you give them a specialty or two

Would it be weird if I just go to a local hospital and ask if I could shadow a doctor? I don’t know who to ask in my school.

One possibility is to reach out to the alumni office at your school. They may be able to connect you with alumni who are physicians in the local area. The school has an incentive to help alumni "engage" with current students and with the school and this is a win-win for you and the alumni office and the alumnus. I've even seen one school that would arange for current students to live with an alumnus in primary care in a very rural area for a week during winter break as a shadowing opportunity. Maybe something like that could be worked out.

Works for me. Only way I've ever gone about it. "Hey, I'm premed, and I think I can learn from you. Would you mind letting me shadow you?"

Never had anyone turn me down yet.

It worked! Few weeks ago, I went to an eye clinic and asked them if I could shadow an optometrist saying that I’m a student from the local college. This morning, the lady gave me a call and told me that I can shadow one of the doctors starting from January. It worked! I’m so happy!

I hope you have an excellent day with the optometrist. Keep in mind, optometrists go to optometry school and they do NOT have an MD. Goodluck to you!

Important to know, but does not mean it won't be an important experience. You should know why you want to be a doctor, and not a nurse/PA/podiatrist/optometrist. This will still definitely help you as your explore careers in medicine!

Yes, I believe this will allow me grow individually and help me explore the different sides of medicine. I believe it will also be a good thing to talk about during my interview as it will show I am not rigid and have found my way in a reasonable manner. I hope what I said makes sense.

Thank y’all so much for the inputs!
