Congrats OP! These are great opportunities.

Personally, I would go with the MD Anderson program. It's a world-class research institution with so much bleeding edge research. Also, MD Anderson is very diverse. If diabetes is not your interest, you can do research in basically every body system at MD Anderson. Whether you want to do orthopaedics, endocrinology, hematology, pathology, radiology, etc., you will have the options to explore them there with some of the most renown physician-scientists. A chance to publish with them is something I would not pass up if I were you.

Also, they're being VERY generous with funding for that summer. Honestly, that would be 50% of my reason for choosing it over NIDDK.

Both will open doors for you this early in the career, which is terrific.
It sounds like you're already leaning in one direction.

If you are currently an MS1, do recognize that this summer will be your last real summer of "break". You have to decide how important an extra 2 weeks of leisure will be for you and your sanity.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, I have decided that I would rather do the CPRTP at MD Anderson; however, I just got accepted to the Orthopedic Surgery Summer Externship Program at the NYU Langone Medical Center.

Pros:
I am interested in ortho and I hear you need ortho research to match
Head of the program is the residency director

Cons:
only $800 stipend

Can u do orthopedic oncology research at md Anderson?

New York City is fun, but not with $800 for an entire summer.

Md Anderson gives you the total package...what will put you on the radar of the PD of the ortho program is ur step 1 and clerkship grades and letter writers...and research but md Anderson is really good...I feel like I just Wouldnt put the unnecessary burden on myself or family if I didnt have to....esp with the options you have
