I’m an MS4 and would say it’s better to do a psych sub-I if you’re going into psych. This will hopefully lead to a good letter of recommendation and some good stories for the interview season. My school requires an IM sub-I for all students and I’m actually about to start this rotation next week (not too thrilled...). It never came up during interviews that I hadn’t done it yet.

Good evening,

I have been trying to decide between psych and IM. I initially thought I would go into IM so I had a sub-I scheduled for IM, but after my third year IM rotation I just completed, I decided I would prefer to go into psych. Therefore, I decided to do a sub-I in psych instead because I thought this would be beneficial for my application to demonstrate responsibility/interest. However, due to scheduling availability at my school, I realized I am now committed to doing the psych sub-i. and cannot switch back into IM since they scheduled someone off the waitlist for the IM sub-I that block.

Would it have been preferable to do an IM sub-I to go into psych, or is it okay to do the psych sub-I?

I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

You're fine with psych sub-I. I'd try and utilize it to get an LOR if you can. Imo you should do at least 1 sub-I in whatever field you're going into, but that's just me and not a hard tule for every field by any means.

If you go into psych, it's perfect, if you go into IM, a lot of people first go to their PCP for psych issues. It's fine either way
