This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry to hear you are in this situation, I went through something similar in undergrad and it is difficult and stressful.
I would encourage you to wait to decide anything until step is over and you have a few weeks to return to normal. I would also think about talking to a few trusted faculty members about what they think you should do, and if they are aware of any resources that might be able to help.
Keep in mind that some jobs are possible during your PhD, you just have to be very careful. A good number of students I know work evenings or weekends in their school library as needed, which pays well and allows you to study or write for the majority of the shift.
Hang in there, do your best on step, and let us know if we can help.

That is a really tough situation. Are you already committed to join a specific lab? I would tell your program director about your dilemma, just to have someone more knowledgeable help you think through your options. They may have ideas you haven't thought of (e.g., a paid TA-ship that would be relevant to your graduate work, rather than sucking effort away from it?). But if you must interrupt your education it might be better to take time off now, if needed, than to end up interrupting your Ph.D. work.
