For secondaries, can the non-academic challenge be a topic related to academics? For example, I am thinking about writing about teaching a chemistry class and seeing them improve. My "challenge" would be that I initially taught them ineffectively but then I changed my teaching style and their grades improved.
That sounds academic to me.

Stray on the safe side. Pick something familial, from volunteering, from work, yadda yadda

Leave no doubt that you are heeding the call of the question. Some people are likely to think that the challenge you described is academic. I would go another direction.

I'm going to go against the crowd and say that the way I interpret this prompt is that the adcom is looking for something not related to your academic experience as a student. If your response is about a job you held teaching chemistry then to me it is not "academic". Being able to self-assess and change the way you do your job is a good topic for a secondary prompt of this kind.

That was my interpretation of the prompt, as well.
