Lots of people go into medicine because of their own experiences with illness. I work in a clinic that specializes in a set of chronic diseases, and a number of our patients are premeds, med students, residents, and attending physicians. One of them is even a transplant recipient!

Your experience as a patient adds to your story. Don't sweat it.

Hi all,

I am a reapplicant who wrote one paragraph about my history of migraines in my PS. Specifically, I talked about how my experiences as a patient for 15 years of my childhood and the relationship I formed with my neurologist sparked my interest in medicine, informed my major in biopsychology, and motivated me to join a neuroscience lab. While I expressed that migraines are no longer an issue for me, I am worried that schools may anticipate this as a red flag. I know that my MD application can't be changed, however I am planning on submitting my DO application this week--so is it safe to include my prior history with migraines or should I rewrite my PS?
You're fine

Not everybody is totally healthy- not even doctors. Your own health issues can feed into your desire to pursue medicine and it makes it stronger. I mean, I feel a totally healthy doctor doesn't understand what it's like to be unwell, or at least not as much as one with some health issues of their own.

my experience chronic childhood migraines was also one of the reasons i became interested in medicine. ive discussed it in secondaries and some interviews. you are fine
