Hi there,

I'm in this cycle and overall a good applicant, but I knew coming in that my research was skimpy for T20 schools.

I have 450 hours over two years in an analytical chemistry lab, which started as independent credit but continued beyond receiving all of my credit. No publications, by nature of the work I was doing. One poster presentation at a school conference.

In my gap year, I'm working full-time doing basic biomed research in a lung cancer lab and already have a pub in the works, fifth or sixth author in a 3-4 impact journal. Should have a PMID by November. Might have another by January.

I know I should update all medical schools that allow updates with this research productivity, but my question is, will it even matter? Will an average pub and the fact that I've been working full-time in biomedical research during my gap year have an impact on my application? I know I'm still below the mark for top schools, just not sure how much

I guess I just have no clue how schools value gap year updates... Thanks for any advice/answers!

Good question. Hope someone knowledgeable answers it.

Will this help? Certainly. Will it be the difference between ultimately obtaining an acceptance vs rejection? Probably not. No one will be saying, "I really want to accept GoBlue, but too bad they didn't have a mid-author publication".

However, it's important to keep in mind that rarely will a single accomplishment change the ultimate outcome. The goal is to demonstrate as many positive attributes and characteristics as possible, in hopes that with each accomplishment, the needle will gradually move enough to warrant an acceptance.
