Psychiatry is not like competitive specialties (e.g. derm, ophtho, surgical specialties) where research is expected. For psychiatry research is only expected for research track applicants. If research is not an interest of your or you are not considering a research career, I would not recommend pursuing research with the goal of trying to get into psychiatry residency as you will not be able to compete with serious researchers and your application will otherwise ring hollow. The important things include your board scores, medical school of origin, clerkship grades, commitment to specialty, and for the more competitve programs, some distinguishing feature which could in include research but may also include public service, advocacy, medical education, innovation, and leadership. If you really want to do do some meaningful research you will need to take a year out of med school at the very least. The Schweitzer fellowship would certainly be impressive, but it doesn't really fall under the research category, more program development/public service as it's about a real world project

For all applicants, scholarly activities (not necessarily original research) would be seen favorably at academic programs - e.g. letter to editor, literature review, case report, poster presentation, workshop/symposium at a conference but the basics are still important
