Whether it counts as one of your pre-req's or not, I would take the entire gen chem/o-chem/biochem series in preparation for the MCAT, which is a chemistry heavy exam. If anyone asks about it in interviews (unlikely), simply explain that you didn't think a one semester combined chemistry class would sufficiently prepare you for medical school.

Yeah, I definitely plan to take the entire sequence regardless.
I was just thinking of applying to a formal post-bacc, and I know that they don't like it when students already have taken pre-reqs, so I was worried about that.

That course title is vague enough I would describe it as an into level science course for non-majors if asked. Even if a program thought the class was fulfilling a prerequisite, one class wouldn't bar you from formal postbac programs, if that is the route you are trying to go. If you are looking at informal postbac programs then there is no need to worry.

I took A&P at a community college with nursing students (2 semester lecture + lab worth 8 credits total), and even though it wasn't "nursing" A&P, it didn't transfer as regular A&P for a 4-year university. The credit was used as "biology elective"...good chance this will be looked at the same way, as a chemistry elective course.

My vote would say no. If you don’t have two classes that say organic chemistry 1 and organic chemistry 2 then you haven’t passed the pre-reqs

Where'd you hear retaking a course where you didn't get a C looks bad? I retook a chem course I had since it was 4 years old. I even forgot to put down that I took bio 1 at the time of my application. They're not going to penalize you for retaking 1 gen course when it's obvious that it's not a formal pre-req.

Hello all,

I'm currently an RN looking to apply to med school some time in the near future.
A few years back I took a course in community college to satisfy my ochem nursing requirement. I know that nursing school ochem does not count, but since this was taken at a community college it technically was not "nursing ochem."
The one semester course (with lab) was titled: "General organic and biochemistry" with the description: This course will cover the basic principles of general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry as needed to understand the biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology of the human body.

Does this count for any of the pre-reqs?
I am hoping it does not because I would like to formally take all those chem classes over again, but I know retaking a course that you got above a C in does not look great.

No, this type of survey/intro course does not count as a pre-requisite. However, I am sure that you learned some good information that will help you build a better foundation for future courses. The combined general, organic, and biochemistry course (called a GOB course) simply does not cover all of the topics that you need to know for the MCAT as well as medicine. I am currently developing a GOB course and the content is geared towards allied health students.
