Hey guys. This is my first time posting here and I would really love some insight. I am a non US IMG who graduated in 2016. My step 1 in 2016 was 210 and step 2 CK 215 and CS pass (1st attempt). I had only 2 USCE and in 2018 I got diagnosed with a chronic illness that left me bed bound. I literally had to leave everything while I tried my hardest to recover. In 2019, I became better and joined an MPH program at a top university in the US to focus on mental health and get back on my feet. Meanwhile I never applied for residency.
I took Step 3 and got a 247. I am over the moon happy that I did well.. but I am scared and unsure of whether I have a chance of matching. I am deeply passionate about Family medicine since I am a patient of chronic illness and primary care is a huge part of my life but I only have 2 USCE and no publication. I am doing research right now, and hopefully will be joining Harvard for research too (waiting to hear back from them) but I don't have a publication yet.
Do you think as a visa requiring person, I have a chance?? Step 1 210, Step 2 215, Step 3 247.
Would love some insight. I'd be really grateful. Thank you.
I think you have a shot if you apply to 300+ programs...

So Non-US IMG, but you've been here for a while already. Do you need a visa?

Its going to be tough, but none of us here can tell you whether it'll happen or not, because we don't know. You just have to apply broadly and find out. If I were you, I would apply broadly to almost every FM and IM program (mostly primary care pathways and community, but probably others too) that sponsors visas, whose cutoffs don't preclude your YOG, and who have taken IMGs in the recent past. I would go all in given your YOG.

I would also try your best to make some type of connection with a program that both offers visas and has taken IMGs. Do research with them or see about observerships, etc.

Thank you! Yes I've been here for a long time but on visas. I would still need a visa. J1 works for me too. I am unable to find observerships anymore.. and now with the pandemic I really don't know. But how do you think I approach them for research?? Thanks again!
