It's a soft deadline that the AAMC suggests. It's not binding. Unless one of your schools explicit says something about it, you can hold on to more than 3. Just make sure you narrow it down to 1 by April 30.
 
Every day you take to drop acceptances is one day longer the waitlist doesn't move and peyote waiting for an acceptance don't know where they will be next year. Many of us have family members with COVID or have passed away. I've ranked and researched schools, the only variable that is likely to change at this point is financial aid, which I can change my rankings in a matter of a few minutes when that info comes in.
