I was told 30+ by my school's premed advising so I did 36 (I think). I also have a low gpa/high mcat situation so had to apply broadly.
 
Last year I applied to 34 schools, received several interviews and 4 from CA schools (ucla, UCI, UCSD, usc)
 
I think it depends on what your stats are and what your app looks like as a whole. I don't think 30+ is out of the question for CA applicants if your stats are low/average and your app isn't mission-focused for particular schools.
