School-dependent. Some schools mandate X semesters of behavioral science

Also, personally, I treat “strong recommendations” as requirements
 
Not having a recommended course may hurt your application, but it's probably too late to do anything about it. Decisions will be made before you could provide grades for the course.
 
Almost all the schools I applied to required at least one semester of behavioral science. I took Sociology and Social Psych for my requirements. Cognitive Psych is a good choice, because you'll get to learn about the parts of the brain and neurotransmitters (Social Psych won't teach you these)
