You have a great application. You have some reaches on there, which is fine, but you need a stronger base of safeties and targets.

Firstly, make sure you apply to both Rutgers, Cooper, and Seton Hall, as you're from NJ.

Others to consider: Drexel, Temple, Einstein, Hofstra, Georgetown, GW, Quinnipiac, Albany, NYMC.

Thank you sm! I grew up in New York my family only moved to NJ around 3 years ago when I was in college so NJ is my permanent residence even though I didn't grow up there/don't live at home anymore. Do you think it would be worth it to apply to NY state schools since I have a connection to the state?

It might be worth it yes, but I'm no expert on residency requirements for NY state, so make sure to look into that and emphasize your connection where appropriate (secondary for example).

Some NY state schools are a bit more OOS friendly anyway - Downstate, Stony Brook for example.

Hi all,

I'm currently one year out of undergrad working a research job in my gap year. I'm getting my application together now and would appreciate any insight on my app/school list.

Major: biochem
cGPA: 3.8
sGPA: 3.8

MCAT: 516 (128/129/129/130)

State of Residence: New Jersey, with ties to MA

Ethnicity: female ORM

Undergrad: competitive undergrad but not T20 or anything like that

Clinical Experience:

60 hours of hospital volunteering as patient transport volunteer
180ish hours over the course of 8-9 months of volunteering as a clinic assistant at a private clinic, involves checking in patients, getting vitals, collecting patient's background and symptoms and presenting the case to the doctor then writing up notes on the treatment plan. I'm going to keep this going after I apply as well.

Total: 250ish hours of clinical volunteering at the time of application. I'm worried this might be low but I'm having difficulty finding other opportunities that can accommodate my work schedule.

Research:

One pub from a project I worked on at my university (500 hours over the course of 8 months)

Full time internship at biotech company (400 hours)
Full time internship at translational oncology lab associated with well known hospitals (400 hours)
Gap year job in translational pharmacology at a well known research institution in my city, 1000 hours at time of application, might get a second pub here but not by the time of application

Total: 2000+ hours of research, one pub second author

Shadowing experience:

Around 40 hours shadowing. One of my weaker areas, would love any insight on if this will hold me back

Non-Clinical Volunteering:
500+ hours over the course of 4 years in a mentoring organization similar to Big Brother Big Sister
70+ hours volunteering with patients undergoing cancer treatment who live in accommodation provided by hospital. I don't think this can be clinical because I didn't interact with the kids in a patient setting, but would appreciate any insight on that.

Total: 570+ hours of long time volunteering

Other Extracurriculars:

Held two executive positions in my sorority (philanthropy and VP academics)
On the leadership team of American cancer society at my school for 3 years
Was a TA for an introductory course all freshman are required to take

Other employment: Tour guide (~80 hours over two months)

Immediate family in medicine? (Y/N): Y
Specialty of Interest (if applicable): N/A
Interest in Primary Care (Y/N): N
Interest in Rural Health (Y/N): N

Looking to add some more safety schools.

Thanks!
Top-heavy and/or low yield. Consider: UVM, OSU, Cincy, CWRU, Iowa, USF, WMED, OUWB, Wayne, VCU, EVMS

You might consider Virginia Tech given your research background. Small school but seems to be an up and comer. Associated with research institute and a large hospital system.
