Hey everyone,

I was just curious to know how long it takes for your university to write a committee letter to apply to medical school. My school took like 3 months to write it last cycle and I wasn't sure if that was the norm.
To me, the more relevant question is how close to the beginning of the cycle are they able to push them out? I care less about whether it takes one month or three to produce, and more about whether it will hold up having my file marked complete once everything else is in.

I had my committee interview done in April and had the letter submitted on the last day of August.

I submitted my paperwork early June. Received my letter late June. Had my letters sent into the office before turning in my paperwork.

It took less than a month at my undergrad but I suppose it would depend on your institution. I would say majority of schools have a certain way of going about it so it doesn't delay anyone's application.

Med schools don't expect the letters until Labor Day. Some feeder schools do them over the summer and pump them out in August. We manage; it won't hurt you.
I got my first IIs this year in end of August and that was after several other IIs were already posted on SDN, so I thought mine was late. Schools may not expect till Labor Day, but they do process sooner those who are able to get it in earlier.

My school got them out mid-cycle so I ignored it and just got individual letters (including by the committee chair). I did have to explain this in a few applications and just said their schedule would have made my application late. Didn't seem to be an issue for me.

That seems like a long time... I was advised not to go through my institution's committee by a mentor associated with the school because they didn't have it together (and charged something like $300 for that letter!) Didn't seem to hurt me so if the situation gets dire, circumvention is an option.
