its good to start thinking of manuscript early. it will help you focus your efforts and organize current project and identify non-obvious gaps in your project. Unless this person is unreasonable, I dont think it is expected that in basic science you will have paper in 6 months, (usually it takes at least 3-4 years to get good paper).
