Bad luck but that intern year isn't going to count if it is 50% psych. Probably most psych residents love that.

I don't know many people who were between psych and rads. Are you sure you know what you're getting into?

I mean with rads you gotta consider that you will likely get to work from home half the time, make about 2x what a psych does, have a great work-life balance, be free of social work, and be in a field which is free of midlevel encroachment.

youre making a great decision

I've looked at the ACMGE requirements set for different advanced programs (rads, gas, PMR, etc) and there's some ambiguity in what would count as an intern year for radiology. I was wondering if anybody knew more about this?

I did more sub-i's with rads programs than with psych. I'm a huge nerd and enjoy studying and really enjoy knowing things about medicine. I think rads is a good fit. I am aware of the excellent lifestyle as well although I think you can probably have a very similar lifestyle in psych if you play your cards right.

I guess I'm really wondering too if I went to reapply would I have a realistic shot at matching a rads program or would they just see I did a year in psychiatry and toss my app?

you will get a spot somewhere if you apply broadly. doing psych first sent you from being a top tier candidate to a lower tier candidate but shouldn't have an issue matching if you are realistic about the programs you apply to

Current psych intern, thinking of trying to switch into radiology. Anybody know how doable this is? I dual applied but ultimately ranked all my psych programs above my rads programs. Realizing that this was a mistake and I am a better fit for radiology.

For reference:
Step 1/2: 250+/250+
Research: 2 rads case report, some unpublished translational rads research.

No radiology residency program at my current academic institution. If I did this would I be able to match into a PGY-2 spot or would I have to redo PGY-1? My year is 50/50 psych and inpatient medicine rotations.

So you’re going from looking inside their head to….. looking INSIDE their head?

There might be a little ambiguity but not enough that 50% psych rotations would count for any specialty. Bad decisions have consequences. Hopefully for you it only involves extending your training by 1 year.
