I’m looking to apply to most of the academic IM programs. Ofc one of the top 5 would be great lool! While everything in my app is good, I’m concerned about the research section. I have many abstracts and posters but no papers at all. Since all types of research experience (paper, abstract or poster) end up in the same bucket on the eras app, would it make me look bad if all my research experiences yielded only abstracts and posters or does it not matter?
for top IM, in terms of importance of elements in your ERAs, school name > letters > research > step scores.

This is sadly very true - especially for BWH and UCSF.

To answer the research questions, depends how you’re selling yourself/your narrative.

If you just applying as the all-around good applicant (good grades, good step, maybe AOA, have done research) who wants to practice medicine, then unless you’re coming from a top school you probably don’t have a great chance no matter the research. These top places often want an interesting narrative/people that want to practice medicine and be a leader in some way.

If you’re applying as somebody who one days wants to be a researcher and you haven’t published anything, also not a great chance at top places. Folks at top places often have double digit pubs before residency if that’s their main thing.

If, however, you’re applying as an applicant who wants to go into something specific (entrepreneurship, advocacy, etc) and you have great other experiences to speak to that, then the lack of pubs won’t matter.

As mentioned above, it depends entirely on which school you’re coming from. For somewhere like BWH, you can probably get away with no research if coming from a T5 school. If coming from T20, probably need a solid but not outstanding app. If coming from below T20 probably need a distinctive feature. Research could be that distinctive feature but it has to be quality research. Not publishing tons of case reports and low tier journals
