If the HR contact would be able to confirm your hours, I can't imagine why that wouldn't be ok. I had activities with several thousands of hours and to my knowledge not a single school called any of my contacts.

HR would be fine, but I would suggest you could still put someone else in the org who was there for some arbitrarily long period of time even if not quite as long as you. They can verify you worked there “for a long time,” and that likely should be enough. it is known that most organizations don’t actually log hours, so it wouldn’t be expected that they could verify the exact number
