Hey

I would like to get at least 220 in 6 weeks of studying. I just finished my second year of med. school yesterday and took my first NBME today. I was compleeeeeeeeeeeeteeelyy crushed, I got 150. Any suggestions.

So you haven't started studying yet? i suggest you start reviewing your weak subjects. I am sure people have scored lower than 150 when they first started studying.

You can do it. (based on an N=1 study...)

I got 175 (340) on my first NBME. 3 weeks later got 214 on an NBME. I still have two weeks to go, so I still haven't done every system either.

Use the scary score for motivation. It's been a great motivation for me every morning at 7:00 (which is basically the crack of dawn to me...)

Yeah! I did terrible on my first one and was completely down...BUT use it as perserverence...motivation. It was your first run through. Now you know what to expect. You CAN do it!! What the mind can believe you can achieve!

Buckle down, even if reading goes slowly (like it does for me!) just stick with it. You are learning more than you realize. Keep doing the Questions. Theres something to being familiar with the style in which they ask you things. So stick with it.
Good Luck!

Considering that you have passed two years of med school, you probably know a lot more material than that score reflects. I imagine that you're not familiar with the NBME style of tests, and you were probably nervous. Don't be too hard on yourself just yet.

Umm...

So, I took the form 2 and scored a 170 on it today...with only 2 weeks to go till exam day!!!!!!!!!!!! Suggestions?!?! Should I just postpone and spare the embarrassment?!!? I'm scoring between 55-75% on UW, but this thing just MASSACRED me!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about being crushed.

WOW I did not think it was possible to get from 170 to 214 in three weeks only !

Thanks for everyone who replied, your messages make me feel much better, SO THERE IS HOPE

If you are scoring %55-75 in UW, then your score should be in the 220+ range. Are you sure that there were no extraneous factors giving you a false low score?

Hi Salma,

I wouldn't worry too much; studying for boards is an exercise in diminishing returns and you're right there at the best part of that curve. Take another test after two weeks of working hard reviewing stuff and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Other factors that may have had something to do with it...

I'm not really sure. I was really nervous for some reason. Oh, and I hadn't taken my Adderall for the day (no, I'm really not kidding...yes, I'm actually diagnosed...no, I don't use it for better grades, just look at my class rank. And yes, I just recently decided it was time I got medicated for it). But in any case, I hate having excuses though.

Talk about feeling inadequate! Oh well, I've decided to postpone my test another month and half. I'm probably being overly paranoid and overly cautious, but it's the feeling I'm getting.

Dang!

I made a mental note to come back to this thread when I got my scores back. This was something I was really stressed about as I was studying

My GPA is below average (I think). My first NBME before studying (but right after taking the subject boards) was 175. 3 weeks later, 214. 2 weeks after that on the real thing, 235. No, it's not an SND score, but when your hoping to pass or would be thrilled to beat average.... 🙂

Maybe that will give hope to some of the below average students out there like me. Anyway, good luck all.
