How are you in clinical rotations if you haven’t passed step 1 yet? How many shelf exams have you failed?
I won’t deep dive into the learning strategies other than to say if you’re smart enough to get accepted into medical school, you’re smart enough to get through. Talk to your school’s learning resource person and make a plan.
Have you ever been evaluated for a learning disability? I’d say 50% of my class is on Ritalin, and most of those people don’t even need it. Of course if you have ADHD or something you should get it treated.
For the emotional piece-you can read my post history, but basically I spent dedicated for step 1 and most of my third year in what became an abusive marriage. Also, at my school med students violate ACGME requirements for duty hours. So my home life was a mess and I was running on little sleep. I was anxious, depressed, and I hated studying medicine during that time. But now that my toxic ex is out of my life and I’m on lighter rotations, I realize that I do still love medicine, I just felt like crap during a horrible time in my life.
All that to say- being a good doctor has absolutely nothing to do with board scores. It’s all about character. So don’t beat yourself up too much. Do the best you can, figure out what the strategy needs to be for you to get your grades up, but don’t torture yourself. I’ve been there. It’s pointless.
And if you truly hate medicine, there’s no shame in quitting. Just please realize your burnout may be from your crippling fear/depression/etc rather than your actual disinterest.
You’re not the only student to struggle in med school. Actually I think you and I are more the norm than the people who seem to have it all together…… you never know what people are going through. My classmates have no idea how rough a time I’ve had of it recently. I put on a face for them.
