Yes, of course. Had the same in general surgery and several PDs have given me the, "let us know if you want to come here and we'll make it happen."

Did you get any love from your 3 reach signals?

Your stats are not particularly strong, but there is something in your application that they like. Perhaps you have very strong LOR that put you on top. It is very tough to match these T20 programs.

Cornell
Northwestern
UTSW
UCLA
Vanderbilt
UChicago
Stanford
UW
BIDMC
Yale

Good luck.
I actually didn’t apply to any of the above. Like you said my stats are not particularly strong lol.

When did you receive the invite? If it's now it's more likely that they needed to fill interview spots than that your self admitted "not strong" application is actually suddenly of nobel laureate quality.

This late in the season we have cancellations and open spots and extend interviews to candidates who we are like "they're not really competitive but maybe we will be presently surprised" and then they round out the bottom of our rank list as a safety net.

Sorry if this feels harsh but sadly it's the game

If they offer you a interview, it's because they believe you would be good enough for their program.

it was in the first round of invites

Title says it all

For sure, but also depends on the program. Some do not care too much about signals. IIRC last cycle Hopkins didn't care, most of the people I interviewed with did not signal - though they also have issues with retention when competing against the Boston, SF, NYC, etc programs.

This cycle I know you guys have twice the amount of signals, so yeah certainly a good sign. Most programs use signals to choose who to interview not for their ranking list so if you got the IV your lack of signal should have little to no impact on where you're ranked.

If this is a one-off thing and arent seeing much love from other T20 programs, then it's likely that something in your app resonated with the reviewers. So hopefully you're able to make that shine in your interview.
