How far apart is New Brunswick from Newark? I didn't think it was that far.

How do you define work/life balance? I get being closer to your support system so do you trust them to help you when you get into clinics? You know your relationship better because medical school will test it, no matter how far apart you are.

Aren't these two schools merging? Or is that in the future?

Rutgers NJMS

Pros
  • closer to support system
  • proximity to NYC is convenient for my fiance who works in NYC, so fiance and I could live together
  • strong clinical training
  • medical school is connected to hospital, and there's FREE PARKING
Cons
  • preclerkships are not P/F -> i've heard the environment is more cut-throat because of this. This is really concerning to me.
  • don't love Newark
Rutgers RWJMS

Pros
  • P/F preclerkships
  • culture seems warm and friendly, better work/life balance due to P/F grading
  • research oriented -> i hope to do a lot of research since i am vying for a competitive specialty
Cons
  • far from my fiance, would be long-distance
Summary: The culture of a school and work/life balance are very important to me, which is why I'm drawn to RWJMS's P/F curriculum. However, being able to live with my fiance is equally as important to me, which makes this decision tough.
I heard from a current M1 that the parking at RWJMS is only like $100 for the whole year which isn’t bad at all, and I looked at the cost of attendance (AKA what you would receive in loans) and they give more than enough money to allocate for transportation. I wouldn’t worry about the parking aspect
