Anyone ever heard of someone getting into med school with a score of a 17 on the MCAT? I told a buddy of mine that he was basically screwed and that it would take miracle to get in this round....

Any thoughts on the subject?

You were pretty much right. Tell "him" to retake next april, he can do it!

Only school will be a school that doesn't require the MCAT. And the Caribbean schools that don't require the MCAT are not approved by many states so it's best for him to retake the MCAT. I don't think any US DO or MD schools will accept that, nor SGU, Ross or AUC in the Caribbean. Unless of course his father is the dean of one of the schools. 👍

Obvious...Retake

Even though it is not an acceptable score by any means....I have a friend who was accepted w/ an 18 and a friend who waitlisted w/ a 15. I would still suggest to him to retake it though.

What schools have standards that low? Just curious.

I hate to say it, but unless your friend was having a really bad day he's probably screwed. Stats show that your score really doesn't improve that much with repeating the test. When I repeated and took it for the 3rd time I only raised my score 6 points. Enough to get me in, but it was tough. I quit my job, took out loans to live on, and studied non stop for three months. It's really hard to get your score up and I don't know why, I think half of it is mental, but you can. The good thing about it however, is the way the test is scored he is at an advantage if he studies. I mean, he is not trying to go up from say 25. As long as his other stats are ok, he may only need to get it up 4-5 points. I have had friends with good grades, ec's, etc, that have gotten in with low 20's.

What will it hurt him to apply? Let them give him an answer instead of assuming. He can either apply and see what happens or not apply and always wonder.

It might hurt his pocket book.

Don't waste your time applying. If your really content on spending the money you would use to apply, please feel free to send it to me.

I'll take some of that considering I've already spent $8K applying/interviewing/
MCATing
