so today i found out that i get to volunteer at this veterinary hospital! and i've NEVER done anything animal/vet related EVERRR! so i'm pretty much a noob and yeah...when the vet tech person there gave me a tour of the place...i was just so AMAZED at everything! all the instruments for surgeries and labs and medical shizzznittss and yeahhh! it was just soooooo cool to me!

have any of y'all felt that way before? you know...the first time you were just in awe of the whole veterinary medicine thanggg? i'm just so excited to start right now! 😀

I totally know how you feel! I was totally that way when I started at the shelter. I was oohing and aaahing all over the place, and every instrument looked soooo shiny!

But then all of the sudden, the vet in the clinic noticed that I was the new high school kid who wanted to become a vet, and went "hey, _____. come over here. you can help me!" I was sooo excited that I pretty much pranced my way over to the table where there was a sedated german shepherd. Then he took a scalpel and sliced the dog open (pretty much the whole abdomen) in one quick swoop. Yea... the dog was dead and it was a necropsy. And he goes, "you can hold the cavity open while I dig in! I'll let you staple him shut when we're done!" Totally cool and awesome, but it was a bit of a shock when I least expected it. Then a couple hours later, one of the vet techs was like "hey, you wanna help decapitate a cat?" 😱

soo much for my trying to ease into things to figure out if I could take the blood and gore (which was my primary purpose for volunteering)

You are cracking me up this morning. That visual...Oh man. *prancy prance prance* and then the " D: " face.

To the OP - totally been there. When I was in middle school, I would always help the vet when she came to the stable I rode at (really just catching and holding horses) - and got super excited about her letting me hand her bandaging supplies when a horse cut up its leg or hold vaccines for the next horse.🙄

i had this experience in high school when i did an internship at a local vet hospital... I saw and expereinced such amazing things and it definitely confirmed my desire to be a vet.

Well, I just worked at the stockyards today - my hands are sore from slapping cattle butts all day, and I reckon I'll regret some of the fence hopping I did by tomorrow morning. There's always something new and different to experience!
