I am back from my lab interview, which is my first interview ever...
I think I did really bad.
The first thing the professor asked was... "why genetics?"
I told him that I'd rather do biochem than genetics, because chemistry was always the subject I was good at, but since I already took classes in genetics and want to graduate on time I stuck with this major
I don't think that this was a good answer b/c the lab deals with plant genetics.
Then a while later he asked me if I had an inherent interest in plants... I told him that I was interested in the genetics of plants... I guess this would be a contradiction, right? Because I guess I didn't show him interest I was interested in genetics, yet I told him I was interested in genetics of plants.
Then he gave me a short plant that was mutagenized, and told me that there was a tall plant... he asked me how to determine the genes responsible for the tall phenotype... I was thinking of the saturation, f2, and f3 screens and was not all all thinking in terms of a simple cross with a ratio progeny count. arrgg...=(
Then he showed me a complementation test and I got confused over his example. I was asking so many questions for clarification that the interview became an office hour. HOW EMBARRASING! ! !
Don't you guys think it's hard to recall the stuff you learned? I could explain the concepts of genetics but it would take time to recall it... I had an A and genetics, and I displayed my incompetance to him.....arrrggggggggggggggg...
He's probably questioning my abililties in genetics now =(... I took a genetics class 1 and a 1/2 years ago.... I CANT REMEMBER THIS STUFF!!!!
Then he showed me the lab, which went fine until he showed me my task of genotyping plants... I was wondering what else I would be doing in addition to that and so I asked him what else I'd be doing... He sort of stuttered as if he sensed that I was disappointed over this task because perhaps it appeared boring. I sensed this then I foolishly blurted out..., "I'm not asking because it seems boring..." By saying this I must've reinforced the impression that that I thought it was going to be boring... WHAT A FOOL I WAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EMBARRASING...
So, I was wondering if first interviews are supposed to be screw ups, because mine obviously was!
=(
Writing all this makes me feel a tad better....🙁
*sigh*
