hey guys, i need some advice.
my first rotation is a 4-week elective in nephrology beginning in early september (which requires internal medicine as a core, but my school/hospital waived that requirement for me). Any ideas on how to prep for this rotation, given I have no background in internal medicine.

you are screwed royally! JK. It is all physio/pathophys. for phsy-read brs renal section until you understand it and read the renal section on in Clinical Pathophysiology Made Ridiculously Simple.
and check out the renal section in step up to medicine.

also, want to understand how to work up/deal with bread and butter things such as acute/chronic renal failure/dialysis/diabetes/acid base/anion gap stuff/ and the RTA booogy man.

Refresh on basic renal calculations and what they mean (BUN:Crt ratio, FENa, etc). Refresh on pathognomonic things (what each cast means, etc). That will get you a long way.
