i don't think you need a great GPA for dental school, but someone may wish to correct me on this point.

No idea. Last I knew dental & opto were very possible no matter what your GPA. That was quite a few years ago though. Things could have changed.

Dental School is the pretty competitive now. There's no way a 2.6 would get him in anywhere. The typical science GPA for most schools now is running at about a 3.3-3.4. Some are a little lower (BU and NYU) and some quite a bit higher (UCLA, UCSF, Harvard). Dental schools isn't as competitive as MD schools, but pretty comparable to DO schools if not more competitive.

I thought DO schools were pretty much the bottom of the barrel as far as stats go. I know my sister got into Oklahoma's DO school with a 2.9. Doubt that was the lowest GPA they took since she was out of state.

Nope. Not bottom of the barrel. It just seems that way from reading SDN (of course, from SDN, a usmle score < 235 is a shameful score). There are MD schools in the US who accept people w/ 2.9 GPA. I think it's a 5% acceptance rate if according to AAMC. But since the OP wants to go dental, then the MD/DO debate is moot 🙂

All I can say is that if you can't join a formal post-bac program for whatever reason, then you can try a do-it-yourself program. A little tougher, less structured, and you may not have access to pre-health professional committee, but it has been done in the past. Just make sure to correct whatever deficit you had that lead to a 2.6 GPA

i believe NYU's average GPA hovers around a 3.0 for dental. You should be somewhat competitive there if your DAT kicks ass
