1. Are dental school GA courses the same as in med school?

2. Considering I have no medical experience, how can I ensure that I will be able to stomach GA and related issues? Is there anything I can sign up for before dental school to get first-hand exposure to people's innards?

you will get use to it after few exposure.🙂

Plus they are not fresh body

Take university anatomy. I am not entirely sure you cut open a person in dental school, but a general anatomy course should dissect fetal pigs, rats, earthworms, etc.

If you don't want to do that, play counter strike, battle field, etc. You can also watch nasty movies. I won't say the title but there is a movie series with the word 'bum' in it. If you can watch that without emotional change, you know you are ready for ANYTHING in the world.

But honestly, 6 hours of counter strike everyday for 1 month will get you ready. Honest truth. I strongly believe that all universities across the world should have 1 mandatory semester of counter strike course. Without using hacks, of course.

from the 5 dental schools I visited so far, they all have to cut open a person.

another way to practice is to get a whole chicken or fish or something in asian market. Cut them open to see internal organs...

Yes, the GA course is the same as in med school. Our program takes the class with med students, and we do cut etc.

Im kind of anxious thinking about it, but Im sure Ill be able to man up once the time comes.

My pre-dental advisor suggests physiology, but Im not sure if that includes an anatomy portion.

Would gore threads on /b/ count as exposure? I can get through those with no problem.

1. You will not take the exact same course as the Med students. At least not at my school (MUSC). You will stop dissection at slightly below the pelvis.

2. There is no way to ensure that you will be able to stomach gross anatomy until you have done it. And yes you are required to actively dissect a cadaver in dental school. I would not worry to much about the squeamish factor, as everyone is initially a little nervous but soon acclimates to the situation. I would suggest an undergraduate course in anatomy (although most undergraduate programs do not entail cadavers, it will still be beneficial to get a working knowledge of human anatomy).

2 movie suggestions: human centipede 2009 and dead alive 1992 (easily the goriest movie ive ever seen lolll) very appropriate for the upcoming month too!

At Pitt, the dental students do head and neck dissections - the first few times are rough, but especially after you get all the skin off, it's not that bad. No one in our class lost their lunch, and it's actually an amazing way to learn the anatomy.

One thing though, most schools don't have enough cadavers for everyone, so you're usually in a group of 4-6, which means if you REALLY don't want to do much cutting, you usually don't have to. But by the end of the semester, even those people who were totally against it in the beginning were getting elbows deep.

Don't stress, I didn't have any significant anatomy experience before then (I cut up a rat in high school) - and I thought it really wasn't that bad.

Good luck!

When my sister started dental school, her first day of class was Gross anatomy, and it was taught at the medical level (head to toe and know EVERYTHING)...... She said her first day she passed out when they started cutting haha

About a week into it, she was one of the people doing the cutting and it almost felt natural to her

So, obviously everyone is different, but I think if your one of those who gets bothered about it, you will get used to it pretty quickly.
