Hello!!

I had two questions that have nothing to do with each other. The first is research experience, I'm doing a research project with 3 other people in one of my upper level biology courses for about 2 months. Am I able to put this as research experience?

My other question was about sending a transcript. I recently took one course at another school and decided to withdraw. I do not think I will be taking anymore courses at this school for undergrad. Do I need to send every school I apply to this transcript? I don't mind, and I would never want to be dishonest. I just didn't know if one W mattered.

Your research question I'm not sure on. However, as for the transcript question I do believe you would have to send them the transcript, even if it just has a W on it. 🙂

I probably wouldn't count this as research experience.

Yes, send the transcript.

Agree with @Shya and @mmmdreamerz about the transcript.

To be more specific:

From VMCAS:
TRANSCRIPTS Arrange for VMCAS to receive one official transcript from every U.S. and English-speaking Canadian college and university you attended.

It is common for students to participate in shorter research projects (e.g., 2 months in the summer). Some of these summer research projects are intense and time-consuming, despite brevity. However, they have nothing to do with completion of an academic course.

In your case, it sounds as if the 2-month research project is required for completion of a bio course at your UG school. Is that correct?

Thank you.

Yes, it is a grade for my bio course.

Are you able to provide additional information about the research? Content ... your duties ... your responsibilities ... etc?

For example, it is common for students to participate in shorter research projects (e.g., 2 months in the summer). Some of these summer research projects are intense and time-consuming, despite brevity ... just saying.

Thank you.

I guess I should clarify... is it like a biology ( or whatever) class where your working on a class research project as part of the class? I would not count that as research experience.

If you are getting credit for working in an actual lab, then I would obviously count that as research. I've had a research credit every semester for most of undergrad and did a summer program with my lab and got credit for that.

There are some grey areas for it. I was told by half the schools I applied to, to count one of the classes research project as research hours, and the other half no. Mine involved grant writing, submitting a research paper, conducting your own research project, etc. It was not in an individual lab, it was rather in a grant funded class that pretty much gave unlimited funds to students to do what they wanted within the realm of developmental biology.

I was told that anything that isn't already published, or at least heading in that direction, doesn't count as research experience. Same with any research (or animal) experiences done as a class requirement. If you chose to include it, schools could disregard it if they wanted, especially if you get conflicting suggestions from the schools you've picked. Either way, your best answer will be from the schools themselves.
