Let's say you apply for 20 IM residency spots, and put MSU as #20 on your list and MSU puts you as #1 on their list.
1) Can they see that you have ranked them as #20?!?
2) If you don't get accepted to your first 19 choices, will you automatically get MSU (being #20), or could that spot have been given to someone else by the time the computers get down to your #20 choice?!?

Those are not two quick questions. What the above says is "I don't understand the match at all."

This has been hashed out in many threads, but the best explanation is the one on NRMPs website--with the long scenario involving a few candidates and their respective rank lists. If you read that until you understand it, then you will understand the match.

For your two quick questions: No (programs do not know where you rank them). No (you won't automatically get anything. You can rank 100 programs and still not match. But no one will get "your" MSU spot if MSU ranks you higher).

Read the website.

The only ones who know how you order your rank list are:

NRMP
You
Your deity of choice
and anyone you choose to tell

MSU won't know if you ranked them first or one-hundred and first. Likewise, you won't know if they ranked you at all, especially if you don't match.
