I read Catalystik's post that applicant's who haven't had course work in the past 2 years dismissed by adcoms...now I am concerned.

How common/important is it to have current coursework? Even for someone with strong GPA and strong MCAT? I was thinking of joining TFA or peace corps, which are 2 year engagements!

I believe, but am not certain, the majority of the ppl in your case get accepted THEN ask for a deferment. But you might want to call the schools you are applying to about this and see what they have to say.

I had friends that did TFA and the peace Corp and many just applied while doing this rather than defer. Schools will not look badly on you for doing this, many view these favorable (at least from what my friends have said).

I think catalystik's comment about this was an incomplete thought on her behalf; or just much more rare than she made it sound. The peace corps, TFA, working in research, or doing any other meaningful, productive, and challenging endeavor will not be dismissed by the vast majority of adcoms. Plenty of people get in after having no coursework for 1-3 years (I'm an example). in fact, taking a year or two between college and med school is becoming less and less non-traditional. Perhaps we can get a clarification from Cat.

I hadn't had a single course in 4 years when I applied and still had multiple acceptances. As long as your time between is productive (mine was spent working), I'm pretty sure that it shouldn't be a problem.
