200 on usmle!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What kind of residency can a person with score of 200 get into ?🙁

one thing that im learning is that the step 1 is just one of the factors residency program directors look at. there are so many other factors that you are still in control of and you should concentrate some of your energy there as well. that means that if you get X score on step 1, there's no one to one correlation that you will get X residency, because so many other things (research, publications, extracurriculars, personality) play a role... congrats on being done...to look at trends, check out the charting outcomes altho take it all with a grain of salt...scores are only part of the equation

Some say clinical grades are more important or just as important as step 1 scores, so keep your head up.

WTF is up with that in my pants ****

Thanks a lot for helping me and encouraging me. I was getting depressed over my score but can keep my head a lil bit up 🙂

The smart move might involve taking Step 2 CK early in 4th year, so that you can get a good score on that to help balance up your Step 1. Talk to your mentor (and get one in whatever field you think you might be interested in, if you don't have one yet). Truth of the matter is that there definitely will be doors that are closed to you now, but lots still remaining open. Getting good advice and mentoring is key.

Try to look at it this way: Yay, you passed! Not everyone can say that.
What specialty are you thinking about? I don't think that score is a dealbreaker unless you were planning on one of the ultra-competitive ones like derm or rad onc.

As of now I have nothing in my mind. but Ent, and diadnostic radiology and many others seem great to me. thanks a lot for giving me hope yall!

ENT and Rads may be a reach with 200.

Agreed.

1/3 applicants matched ENT last year (2007) in the range of 191-200. For radiology, 14/20 applicants matched in the 191-200 range.

Keep in mind these are numbers of applicants who got interviews and who submitted a rank list with at least one ENT program. Both fields exhibit self-selection (i.e. people who don't have compelling reasons to stay in the game with that score don't tend to even apply for ENT) as well as program selection (i.e. it's likely that many people initially apply but don't get any interviews and thus aren't able to put any programs of that specialty on their rank list), and you should interpret these numbers conservatively with those considerations in mind.

I think the verdict is that yes, there are some specialties & some programs that are pretty much out of the question unless your dad is the program director or the new research wing shares your last name or you were a practicing attending yourself back in Pakistan or something. But there are plenty of specialties that are still well within range if you can get a solid application other than Step 1 working for you. I mean there'll be people saying, "you can still do it, my brother's roommate's sister's friend had a 195 and matched ENT, anything's possible!" but if you go over to Pre-Allo you see the same phenomenon with the MCAT. Random people with 24's asking if they still have a shot at an MD program and people saying "you can do it, anything's possible!" when you and I both know it's just not. Not unless they're truly phenomenal in every other way or have some ace in the hole that gives them an unfair advantage. I mean take my opinion with a grain of salt, and be assured that you've got lots of solid options for residency, but being realistic will probably serve you well.

and be assured that you've got lots of solid options for residency,

You will still have many of both surgical and non-surgical options open to you. Just keep an open mind and realize that it is probably not as realistic to focus in on the most competitive fields within these.

I hope these are not false hope🙁 so any suggestions for me?

Have you done third year yet?

If not, don't stress out TOO much. You might hate ENT. You might hate radiology. You might love psychiatry, or PM&R, or path, which are not competitive.

So wait and see what you like about third year. Do as well as you can during third year - never be late, try your best to read, do as well as you can on the shelves, etc. Then, if you need to, take Step 2 CK early.

It'll work out.

Yeah, definitely keep an open mind about all these fields. If you decide you love a non-competitive field, like those smq mentioned above (I'd also add FM, IM, OB, neuro, and gen surg to this mix), you certainly aren't out of the game.

you will be eliminated in first pass screening for almost every program in the united states with that score

I would say it would probably be a waste of time and money to apply to (unless you have an otherwise stellar resume):
1. Derm
2. PRS
3. Ophtho
4. ENT
5. Ortho
6. Rads

Sorry, it's just that many of these programs have cut-offs so you would be automatically filtered. Even community programs in these field are pretty competitive.

I'd probably add rad onc and uro to this list. Other than this, any specialty (and there are still a lot of them) is still in the running.
