i know there are a few threads already about this topic, but a) i'm too lazy to go back and check them, and b) i want a more current opinion from fellow residents.

what'r some of the books YOU'D recommend to brush up on before JULY 1, 2005 comes???

Surg path manuals: i've been hearing lester, and Westra/Hruban (with the lester book a fav. apparently).

gen histo: histo for pathologists (sternberg), wheater's functional histology/histopathology -- i've got NO clue which is better.

OTHER PATH BOOKS to brush up on???

If you are too lazy to search then I am too lazy to reply. 😉

Lester vs Westra is debatable - everyone has their own opinion. I personally think Lester has more useful info in it, but Westra has more helpful pictures. I would look at both and see which one you like. ALthough your grossing room may have them anyway. Lester is nice to have a "clean" copy though because there is some info that it can be good to read, whereas Westra is mostly straightforward images and guides.

Histo for pathologists a lot of people like. I don't think it's that great, and I fall asleep reading it. I like Wheater. If you want to spend time reviewing normal histo, more power to you - there isn't a ton of utility in it. If you know your histo well you will be a good pathologist, but a lot of normal histo sort of comes as you go through things. Reading about it isn't that helpful in a lot of circumstances.

Rosai/Ackerman is IMHO the best surg path text and is geared towards residents and teaching you about surg path. If you can read that you will be ahead of the game.

McClatchey and Henry are two good CP standard texts.

THE MOST I would do is normal histology. Focus on studying for StepIII.

I hear that "Practical Guide to Transfusion Medicine" by Petrides is good for blood bank rotation, but haven't had luck getting if from online or bookstores.

I like this advice. Problem is...I've done neither.

And I won't do either, by the looks of things.
Me neither. I had high hopes...then reality set in. Why waste this golden time studying? We will never get it back. Live it up, I say.

Exactly! I got a ton of stuff I gotta deal with now...last thing I wanna deal with during these last months of total freedom is reading a frickin' book.

Probably be like me - have all these plans to read stuff in the weeks and months before you start, but then you don't. So the weekend before you actually start you get panicked and try to read everything, but of course you can't read everything so you end up just skimming and learning nothing.

Sounds about right. Ah well.

YES BUY THIS BOOK.

You should be able to get it from the AABB press.

Seriously I would make love to this book if I could avoid getting papercuts.

Here is a short list: Surg path manual (doesn't matter which, or borrow and photocopy before big specimens), baby demay, bethesda cytology, new robbins, WHO books, Sternberg surg path for dummies (Can't think of the name now... maroon book... come on you know the one)

And some porn

Just ordered all my Step III books from Amazon. Yep, three new coasters are speeding towards my doorstep as I type this.

Yeah, I got my step 3 books from Amazon a month or so ago. They're sitting at my parents' house along with the pile of books that I transported down there a two weeks ago. They are probably using them as coasters but probably are not big enough to be used as doorstops.

Thank you both. If I hadn't just gotten off the phone with a girl after a 2 hour conversation I would feel quite emasculated right now.

what books are fellow ms4's getting for the exciting ( :barf: ) step III?

i was hoping my first aid for step 2 would be enuf....agree/disagree/comments??

Strong Medicine for Step 3
Kaplan QBook for Step 3
Blueprints Guide to the CCS

I have read the books 3 times now. I have done the questions twice now. I am gonna rock Step 3.

You, on the other hand, will fail because you haven't started studying for Step 3 yet.

Similar to Andy, I got Strong Medicine and Kaplan QBook. I also got Crush Step 3, which isn't very thorough (but that's the point: a thin glaze of refresher).

Word.

I heard that Crush Step 3 was very redundant with Crush Step 2. I figured that since I own Crush Step 2, I would just get Strong Medicine for Step 3. This book isn't all that long too...not that I've like read any of it...the book isn't even in the same state!

Mmm. You know else goes well? Mint chocolate chip ice cream.

YUM! That is my favorite! I like the kind from Baskin-Robbins with the shaved chocolate. I like daqueri ice better, but it's an ice, not an ice cream. Best sorbet ever is stawberry made by this little shop in Bellingham, WA. *drool*

I feel sorry for the lactose intolerant folk who get explosive mudbutt and furious flatulence after downing a pint of ice cream.

I'm lactose intolerant but I can handle ice cream, pudding, custard. I do have problems with yogurt though.

What about the WHO books? I've only seen people refer to the WHO books for questions but I've never heard of anyone using it as a knowledge source. I thought the hemepath and neuropath WHO books were very good. Sometimes when I read Rosai I'd read a page and then at the end of the page I'd be like "and what the hell did I just read?".
