The official 2007-2008 budget check

How much have you spent so far in the 2007-2008 admission cycle?

RULES: Do not include tuition/books/etc... Also, do not count the food you ate while traveling for interviews (expenses that you'd ordinarily incur at home). Only count the following expenses:

  1. Actual application costs
  2. Random costs (ie postage, copies, fax charges, etc...)
  3. Interview travel expenses (airfare, hotel, gas, etc..)
  4. Cost of standardized tests and preparation
  5. Transcript fees
  6. Acceptance deposits
  7. Any other expense you can think of....

Feel free to post multiple times if you are still incurring expenses. Please also list the # of schools you've applied to and have interviewed at. Also, indicate how you are paying (parents, working more, prostitution, etc...)

My answer: 5 schools applied to, 2 interviews (one local, one cross country). Pharmcas--$295, Supplementals--$175 (i've only turned in 4 of the 5), Hotel--$450 (yeah yeah 3 nights at a really nice hotel, i'm spoiled, leave me alone. I also cashed in airline miles so airfare was free), PCAT--$160 (test + kaplan book), Gas--$40, Transcripts--$64.

Total: $1184.00 as of 1/13/08.

Future expenses: UH Hilo campus visit (& side vacation/green fees in Oahu) if accepted should add another $1k+. Add in another $700-800 if I get another interview in Chicago.

  1. $50: Supplemental application fee
  2. $5: certified mail
  3. $5: gas to interview
  4. $175: Pharmcas
  5. $15: transcript fees
  6. $1,000 acceptance deposit
  7. $25: new tie
  8. $125: PCAT + $40 gas
= $1,440

PharmCAS: $335
Supplementals: $340
Hotels: $350
Gas: $270
Gifts for my eLORS (Christmas): $ 130
New 2 piece suit, tie and top: $260
Miscellaneous costs: $100+

~$1800.00

Aye forgot transcript fees. $12

Schools applied: 3

PCAT (inclu/study books): $200
Pharmcas (inclu/transcripts): $300
Supplementals: $250
Suit: $250
Hotel: $40
Rental Car and Gas: $70
Flight: $250
Acceptance deposit: $1000

Total: $2310

Thankfully, the first school I interviewed at accepted me. Had I interviewed with USC and UIowa I would have spent another $700-$1000 on plane fare and rental cars.

My wife works full time and she paid for most of it.

You didn't bother applying to any schools in Texas?

Schoos applied: 14

PCAT (online class/material): ~$1,100
PCAT tests: $125 x 3 times = $375
PharmCAS: $655
Supplemental: ~$400-500
Flight: $230
Acceptance deposit: $500
Gas: $50

Total: $3,310 (What???! I didn't realize that I spent that much money!!!)

Schools applied: 2

1) Incarnate Word $100
2) UT Austin: fee waived

Total so far $100

I applied 16 schools, I don't even wanna calculated the total cost, it will gimme a heart attack for sure.😡

just take some aspirin. haha.

labrat024--did you only send a supplemental to one school?

Expenses I forgot:
$20 -- gift cards for my LOR people (i'm cheap, haha sorry).
$25 -- A new tie I ended up not using, haha...maybe for the next interview (it has happy faces on it).

babetrang--i think you've spent the most out of all of us...haha, but i guess it's worth it with that acceptance!!

Yeah, it was a good investment for the future... I'll earn my $3,310 back soon!

I easily spent over 2.5k in interviews across the country for all those flights and hotel costs. All for nothing, too, as I ended up going to a school that didn't require interviews 🙂 I don't regret it though, because I ultimately found it to be a valuable experience.

I definitely spent over $2500 between having to book last minute flights for interviews because I was given no notice, to review books, pharmcas and supplementals. I don't want to do the math to figure out exactly how much I spent but it was def. expensive, but very worth it now that I'm going to pharm school.

Let's see...
I usually don't write anything on this forum, but this thing really catches my eye. I applied for two schools. I am still waiting for any feedback from both of them.
PharmCAS:$175
PCAT(2 times+transcript request for one):$270
PCAT BOOKS(KAPLAN AND REA):$65
Gas so far: $50
supplementals: $130

total of $690 has been spent already. I did not realize that I have spent so much money just to apply for schools. They'd better give me some kinds of feedback soon. 😡😡😡

Yes, I was going to send one to UIC if I didn't get in to Midwestern CCP. I saved myself 50 bucks and spent it on some Grey Goose for my celebration. :hardy:
Oh yeah expenses I forgot:
$3.00: thank you cards for the admission committee and interviewers (even cheaper)

Off topic, but I hate Grey Goose! Whenever I try to tell someone about the "Grey Goo Scenario," they think that I am talking about vodka.

Wow, I have a feeling this is going to be depressing!

1. PharmCAS: $335, Supplementals: $230
2. Random costs: Certified mail for all supplementals = ~$15
3. Interview travel expenses: So far, $170 flight, ~$100 gas, but these are my closest two schools! It will add up quickly if I get more interviews..
4. PCAT + Kaplan book + Barron's book = $195
5. Transcripts: ~$40 + AP scores $25 + PCAT scores $20 = $85
6. None yet...
7. Interview suit + new shoes: $250

Total as of today: $1380

Oh my goodness, that is awful! And I still might (hopefully!) have three cross-country interviews where I don't get to stay with friends or family! Eeeks!! :scared:

-PharmCAS: 455
-Supplementals: 285
-Transcripts: 65
-Postage/Faxing: 10
-PCAT: 125
-Library fines for PCAT study books: 17
-Interview: 350 (I haven't quite booked my ticket, but this is what I am guessing)
-counselor fees for the anxiety associated with applications: thousands 🙂

Grand total: $1307 - but I'm hoping for another interview or two

Well if the end of the world was coming I would want some Grey Goose! That would be my Grey Goo Scenario.

Updated:

+ $700 -- Round trip airfare & hotel to Honolulu and inter-island airfare between HNL and ITO.

New total: I'm at about ~$1900 spent for the '07-'08 cycle. I'm hesitant to throw down another $50 for a Midwestern CCP supplemental & potential $600 in airfare/hotel for another interview, especially with the security of an acceptance in hand.

But I have 'til March 2 to decide on that...yeek.

PCAT 125 X 2 = 250
Suit 500+ shoes 100 + accessories 100= 700
Gas = 5 ( so far)
Apps (2 this year,1 last year) = 350

Total = $1305

Still hoping to go to Vegas and at some time put down $1000 deposit on school

Probable Total ~ $2700😱

PCAT: $125
Suit already had one (was $400)
Application to UT Austin: WAIVED
Application to Incarnate Word: $100
Interview UT Austin: $40 for gas
Interview Incarnate Word: (have not received, should be max $10 for gas)
Deposit for school (applied to tuition at either school, doesn't count)
Grand total: $275

Wow, this is a reality check. I didn't realize that I had spent that much. It all came out of my paychecks. So that's where all my money went....🙂

Application fees: $375
Transcripts/Scores: $90
Mailing supplies/fees: $10
Interview 1 (flight, hotel, taxi): $420
Gas to interview 2: $20
Gas to interview 3: $10
New shirt for suit: $45

Total $970

Oh well, I better get used to it. Pharmacy school itself will be way more expensive.

PharmCAS fee: $615 (13 schools)
Supplemental Application fee: $815
PCAT + late registration fees: $425
PCAT study guide: $200
Clothing for the interviews: $260 (mom paid about $200 self: about $60)
WES credential evaluation: $200
Airfare/Hotel: $488
Overnight mail: $25 X 2 =$50
RENTAL CAR AT las vegas + MARTA + PARKING = 128+20+14 = 162
Flight to Philadelphia + HOTEL + RENTAL CAR + MARTA PARKING = 765.22

Total: $3980 updated.!!😱

Still more to come: Airfare to Philly x 2, gas to savannah, gas to Charlotte, NC --- probably about $300-400.. all I need is an official acceptance letter in hand so I can stop spending..but.. I would be happy to spend more for any future acceptance deposit🙂

I am not including tuition for taking more classes this semester to increase GPA.

I wish I know my PCAT score in advance before wasting the application fee for those top notch schools. And I also regret applying to only ONE non-PCAT schools. Is it too late to apply to MCPHS?

UT Transfer application fee: $60
PCAT fee + late fee: $175
PCAT study guides: $60
UT COP application fee: $100
Transcripts: ~$40
Mail: ~$30

Total: $465 😱

Wow, I know that's not as much as some people have spent, but that's a lot of money to spend and maybe not even get in... so depressing.

pharmcas: $615 (13 schools)
transcripts: $75
AP credit transcript: $25
ACT Score transcript: :$25
overnight mail : $40
supplementals: $790
pcat X3: 300
pcat kaplan course: 1100 ( went from 59 composite to 88 after course...)
flight to ny (st. john fisher) :500, hotel 120
flight to chicago (midwestern): 120, hotel 120
flight to DC (howard): flight 220, hotel 100
suit : 200
ny deposit: 1500
chicago deposit: 1000
time off of work to fly out of state 3X....?

TOTAL: $5950!!! since june 2007, about 6 months!

its worth it!! ive been accpeted to 2 pharmacy schools so far and many other interviews- now i just have to decide which one i want to go to! im done interviewing though...its either st. john fisher or midwestern ccp.

I would include my tuition, since I took 4 extra classes after graduating with my undergraduate degree. I had a full-tuition scholarship in undergrad (at Purdue, which has a pharmacy program), so if I would have known then that I wanted to go to pharmacy school I could have taken those classes for free.

So, 4 classes x $900 = $3600
Textbooks for 4 classes = approx. $600
PCAT, taken twice, with extra scores = $290
Gas to drive to PCAT $60
Pharmcas $235
Supplemental and holding fees $400
PCAT prep book $15
Gas to drive to class $1200

Total of $6400! And I didn't go to any interviews (got into first choice school without interview, so I'm not going to any others) and I only paid one supplemental and one hold-my-spot fee.

For the purposes of the poll, subtracting tuition, textbooks, and gas to class:
$1,000

I paid for everything myself with savings and credit card, except for my parents paid for the first PCAT and for the $100 supplement fee. So that's $6,155 out of my pocket - no wonder I didn't save any money this year!

I'm really surprised at how spread out the results are of this post, I was expecting a bell curve or something with most people at $1500-$2500. Then again, the choices might be too wide.

I'm around 3000-3500... my fault though, should'a had a high enough GPA to apply to one school🙁

Oh my, how times have changed. I don't think anyone in my class paid this amount of money. I didn't pay anything, since I was applying to the school which was part of the same state university system, so the application fee was waived, my school did (and still does) transcripts for free regardless of where they go, and the interview was only 16 miles from my house.
