For those of you who took step 1 this year (like me), I know the score sheet said the average in past years was 217 +/- 23. But does anyone know the average from this year?

on the nrmp data it cited the avg step 1 of matched applicants, or applicants in the match, i don't remember as like 222 - is that just because the tiny number of people who fail arent in that number or what? was a little confused by that.

Pretty much. Though I don't know if its necessarily a tiny number.

There are a lot of foreign medical grads that take the USMLE every year, and quite a few of them fail it. Frankly, I think virtually every medical school in the country has a couple of students that fail on their first try as well.

The average that comes out each year with the scores (this year, 218) includes all test takers, including those who failed. The average published by the NRMP is the average of students applying for the match, which is derived from scores submitted for the match. Since a passing score on step 1 is required for licensure, everyone who fails will either re-take and pass eventually, or leave med school (and thus, not apply for a residency spot). So the scores from the NRMP do not include the failing scores, or have them somehow averaged with the passing scores of those same applicants.
