2008 Season

I am an IMG and i am wondering, when i use the ADTS to check my uploaded documents it does not list my LORs, saying that my LORs cannot be uploaded until they have been assigned to programs to which i have applied. I have already applied to programs and assigned my LORs so i would expect my LORs to be uploaded by now, i don't think it is done manually by actual staff but electronically so is there a problem or should i give the system some more time? Anymore IMGs having this problem? Just don't want anything to go wrong this season.

It is done manually by staff. We received a long email from our school saying, in part, the following:
"The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) will not be open until Tuesday, September 4 to transmit your supporting documents (letters of recommendation and pictures.) Please keep in mind that you do not have to submit your application during the first week. Many students submit their applicationsall through September and do just fine." :meanie:

Guys...chill. 😉 I doubt there will be any PD's actually downloading apps over a long holiday weekend. As I stated before, EM usually doesn't pick up until later in the month so don't freak out if nothing happens over the first few days. Enjoy the holiday weekend and enjoy the fact that your app is done and submitted. Sitting around and worrying about it won't change anything. ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME...cuz it'll be gone next year. I'm working straight through this weekend.

🙁 mine isn't completed 🙁

ooopps, my bad.🙂

Can we get interview invites without LORs in? That seems to be my bottleneck...

After choosing to send usmle scores (not resend), submitting eras and applying to programs. I noticed that under "track applications" it says: "USMLE Transcript: Not Uploaded to PostOffice yet".

Does anyone know if we have to do anything additionally at our school our through USMLE? Or does it just take some time to get in there?

Thanks.

Can we get interview invites without LORs in? That seems to be my bottleneck...

I second the question. I imagine so since I doubt any programs screen based on LORs. One program director from a very competitive programt told me his screening strategery and it was basically 1) AOA, 2) 240+, 3) etc, 4) etc.

I guess you could make the argument that without a SLOR your application is not complete. We shall see...

yes u can...but everything else would probably have to be exceptional. There are some applicants from last year that have already confirmed this.

I guess the answer to this question is yes, at least for some programs, because I was offered an interview today and haven't uploaded my letters yet. I submitted everything but the letters (and the MSPE) on 9/2. I'm pretty psyched - I wasn't expecting to hear back from anybody anytime soon...so if your letters aren't in my advice is to submit and upload them as they come. Good luck!

who is giving interview invites already?

Congrats, universe explorer.. yeah I'm waiting on my LORs to be uploaded, as well as my transcript (our school doesn't upload the transcript till Oct 1!!!) Arg.

wow, congrats, Universe Explorer! Here I was excited just to see my app being downloaded! 😛 So your school uploaded your transcript right away? That's nice. You must be pretty desirable on paper 🙂

BTW, can you tell the season is upon us? This forum is suddenly riddled with us 4th years!!! :beat:

Yeah congrats on the interview

Tis the season for football and nervous fourth years ....GOTTA LOVE IT 😀

congrats homeslice...time for an interview thread? If so, the honors go to you😀

Don't forget to post in the residency reviews as you go along! Some of us will really appreciate it!

Many of us, myself included, worked really hard to put up those residency reviews for your benefit. Please continue to do so this year. I'm sure many of you have found them helpful and I only ask that you continue this for those that come after you. If there are any significant programs, or just info you feel is lacking...please update it. Many said they would do it after the match. That time has come and gone without any contribution. Keep it alive while on the road...you'll see it will help in collecting your thoughts about and program and really evaluating what you want in one. You will see how that evolves through the process. Good luck everyone!

My one question is, is it really "safe" to do so? Can't program directors figure out who you are? I've already figured out that one frequent poster here is an attending from a program I worked at in July....

Those of us that did ended up matching just fine. And I know for a fact that my identity was found out. I gave my honest opinion on programs based on what was presented to me on that day and what I found to be important to me. No program is perfect and there will be reasons why you feel that way. I would be worried if you posted things that were absolutely untrue and completeley unprofessional. There shouldn't be a problem if you do it in a respectful way. Besides...if a program has so many negatives that you don't feel you'd be happy there, why would you rank it? PD's talk to each other about applicants. We can do the same.

And when all else fails...a screen name was made so people could post things anonomously.

I am super easy to figure out, people do it all the time. Yet, I found the reviews most helpful/interesting when posted by a known reviewer. Thus, I will likely be posting as myself. I'm not looking to play games with anybody, anyway. To echo Drill's sentiments, see my post on the residency thread on those that never ended up posting. 👎 No one is asking for a rank order list, but it is like organ donation - should you really take if you are unwilling to give???

Hey, are you supposed to get departmental or individual slors for away rotations? 😕

Hey, are you supposed to get departmental or individual slors for away rotations? 😕

I know that at one place I was looking to rotate the SLORs are written by the department (i.e. a faculty member fills it out after conferring) and then signed to the PD and APD.

Apparently, if you really want you can ask just one faculty member to write it for you but unless this person was Peter Rosen I can't see how that would be an advantage over having a SLOR from "the faculty" of a well-respected program.

Hey, are you supposed to get departmental or individual slors for away rotations? 😕

I got a couple individuals to write slors at my first rotation, and the place I'm rotating now told us they write "composite letters", which I assume is like a deptartmental version. Initially, I thought they were supposed to be individual letters, but I guess it varies...now, if only the authors would hurry up and submit them! 🙂

Speaking of letters, what combination are you guys using? My dean keeps suggesting I send 2 EM letters and 2 non-EM letters, but the folks I talk to in the ED's all seem to suggest they only care about the EM letters...

A PD in EM told me to get 2 SLORs and 1 "this applicant plays well with others" letter.

Almost all my apps have been downloaded and no invite as of late. Hopefully things start to pick up this coming week. I feel like that fat kid at the high school prom waiting to be asked to dance.

no invites here either...None of us mere mortals have received interviews yet.

congrats on the early invite!

care to share what program you heard from?

Thanks all!

I'd rather not name the program right now - I'm sure it was just an aberration, I expect it will be a few weeks before I hear from anyone else - but I'll def. post in the interviews offered thread as the season progresses...I look forward to posting and reading about the programs everyone visits this year - it's always the best thread of the year.

I sent off my ERAS last week and just got my first interview invite yesterday. Didn't realize it'd happen that fast, considering I only have one letter of rec in, no Dean's letter yet, no transcript, and haven't taken step 2 yet!

Congrats to all getting interview offers already - I will admit, it does make me anxious - but I know it is super early, so those of you with offers must be superstars! :luck:

Please post in the interview offer thread if you get the chance and feel like sharing. I know the rest of us are dying to know who has already handed out interview spots.

I'm already checking my email like a crazy person. This is going to continue for months - I don't know if I can take it! 😍

Congrats again guys!

While I'm probably a slightly above average applicant, I am by no means a superstar. Only passed the first two years and then started doing well as a third year.

I am just an average applicant, 220s, passed mostly, few honors in preclinical year, honors and high passes in EM rotations... first interview invite today! OSU!

🙂

I've been lurking for a while...
I'll be applying for EM this year. 😳

I finished my last EM rotation today - it's gonna be weird to go back to the 3rd year-ish grind of required clerkships (medicine SubI - Bleh) and 2nd year-ish boredom of studying (Step 2 - double bleh!) for the next couple months...

tell me about it! One more week of happiness for me and then it's back to the grind for me as well. Have to do psych, step 2, etc. At least I already did my sub-I and won't have to do another medicine rotation until I'm a MD 😍

What electives is everyone doing from now until graduation?

I've got radiology, anesthesia, ID, and Trauma surg. Plus my sub-I in medicine still to do.... I'm doing an ICU month right now.

I have a "back to the classroom" requirement in October, Nov/Dec are off for interviews, January I'm at the Big Sky Clinic in Montana, and Feb I'm doing a rads rotation at the Univ of VT (my fiance lives in Burlington). Any suggestions for March and April?

My school doesn't have nearly enough elective time in my opinion...I still have a bunch of required clerkships - anesthesia, geriatrics, surgical subs - but they're all pretty chill (besides the SubI). It will all be worth it in the end though, because I get to finish med school doing a radiology elective in Australia, and since it's at the end of the year I can stay for a few weeks afterwards and come back just in time for graduation (6-7 weeks total). I've always wanted to go - I can't wait to see my first kangaroo...

I finally submitted my ERAS/application. I know, I know, it took me forever... but i finally got the nerve to click the submit button... and of course they asked me about a kazillion times if i were sure of my decision... Heck no, but i pressed yes anyway... Now i'm just waiting for the rejections to start rolling in.

Love the positive attitude sleepy. Maybe you should wake up, j/k.

H24G - thanks for the Christiana review. I'm writing reviews of the places I rotated, and will post them soon (I kinda want to see if they offer me an interview first :scared:)

<ahem> Since some of us have a ton of interviews, including at least one place they rotated at, perhaps this would be good time for more reviews to appear in the "Residency Reviews" thread.

Actually, that does sound like a great way to put off doing more usmleworld questions...I'll post some tonight. In other news, what is the consensus for four vs. three LORs? I know we started talking about this, and then it disappeared...I got my fourth LOR today (the composite letter from my last away rotation), and just when I was about to add it on ERAS I chickened out b/c I already have 3...I guess I really do have to add it - it looks silly to have an away and not have a letter...You're right. I'll add it. Thanks for all the advice. 😎
