I have few questions for the D.O.'s who are in pathology training and those who are applying for training, regarding licensing in the 5 states and the other states as well. Is it possible to get licensed without an osteopathic intern year? It seems absurd to spend a year in training (and doing very non-pathology work) when its not required to become a pathologist 😱. For the other states are COMLEX I,II, III sufficient or are USMLEs necessary?

I had a discussion with a surgeon at the hospital where I do most of my "core rotations" and he was pretty sure that there is no resolution 42 approval (in Pennsylvania at least) without an intern year.

I believe that the other 45 states are no problem when completing an ACGME pathology program and passing Ap/CP boards. I hope to get more info while on the interview trail over the next few months....I also heard that the WV legislature has attempted to break the AOA requirement.

I would love to hear any of your experiences and opinions.

I don't think you have to worry about it in path. I'm not in one of the 5 states, but rotated at a big ACGME program in one of those states, and the DO residents I talked to said it didn't matter and they weren't concerned about it.
I don't think it matters for residency anyway...you're issued a state license through the university through the state medical board, which would be MD if you're at an MD program.
Maybe I'm wrong, dunno...I just can't stand giving the AOA my time of day, much less an entire intern year.

Last I heard (and I am not a DO so I don't follow it)...
Some of the states were talking about altering the rules, but as it stood,
If you were a DO you NEEDED an intern year to practice in those states.

It doesn't matter for residency (but check with the program to be sure), but definitely matters for a job/getting a state license..
(which makes me wonder how that works for DOs in those 5 states taking boards, do they just pick a different state to get a license??)

You should contact the AOA and get the scoop from the source.

Thanks for the info everyone...I sent an e-mail to the American College of Osteopathic Pathologists and will let everyone here know what I find out from them.
