2010 Program Director Survey- Step 2

The 2010 NRMP Program Directory Survey (http://www.nrmp.org/data/programresultsbyspecialty2010v3.pdf), page 23; suggests that 70% of programs require step 2 CK scores prior to inviting students for an interview. I would appreciate any thoughts from current residents and applicants regarding how your programs/mentors are advising in regards to step 2 CK. Is a solid step 1 no longer enough?

Our school's advisors warned our class that a lot of residencies (across specialty spectrum) have begun to require CK scores to be ranked. I haven't heard of this being a requirement for an interview. When I asked my home PD about CK he suggested its not as useful for differentiating candidates as step 1 because everyone does well on CK. So far I have only come across two derm programs (UCSF and CCF) that require step 2 CK to be ranked. I think a big part of this new requirement has to do with a lot of people waiting to take step 2 CK/CS until late in the year, then failing with insufficient time to repeat before starting PGY1. This happened to two or three graduating seniors at my school last year (none derm) and their programs were not very happy about starting down an intern.
