I know many universities offer a paid summer research internship for undergraduates, and I recently started to apply to some; Stanford, JHU etc. My concern is that I've only got one semester of research under my belt, and I've heard that many of these programs only choose candidates with years of research, should I even bother trying to get in? I have a good gpa and am very interested in my research and the opportunities offered at these other universities.

If you're a minority, you'll definitely get in somewhere. Else, you still have a shot!

Yeah I'm in the application process for these summer programs too, and literally every single one said something along the lines of, "WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO APPLY IF YOU'RE IN A MINORITY!!! PLEASE APPLY! RESEARCH EXP OPTIONAL!" Not to mention a third of these programs are only for minorities.

I was born in Russia and am the first one in my family to attend a US university, and my family also is eligible for financial assistance etc. I don't think that falls under minority though, does it?
