AACOM posted this report from the previous application cycle on their website today: http://www.aacom.org/data/applicantsmatriculants/Documents/2013-app-report.pdf

Any interesting trends or numbers? The research questions on page 11 caught my attention. Apparently 73.6% of DO applicants also applied to MD schools at some point (current or previous cycle).

The list of the top 20 feeder schools on page 7 was also interesting. The most applications came from Michigan State, University of Michigan, and UCLA.

Great find.

Looks like the average applicant has a 26 MCAT.

But I will definitely be interested in the average matriculant. I believe the average MCAT for MD applicants is somewhat similar, but obviously we're dealing with a much larger pool of applicants (16k for DO vs. 45k for MD).

While the GPA is high, grade replacement makes comparing GPA between MD and DO applicants apples to oranges.

+1

It would have been nice if they included matriculant data.

We shouldn't see the matriculant average until Dec/Jan.

Things just seem to be getting more and more competitive.

Based on previous years (e.g. 2011-2012 applicants had 25.73 MCAT scores and matriculants had 26.85 MCAT scores), I wouldn't be surprised if the matriculant average for the class of 2017 broke 27 on the MCAT.

The GPAs are about the same, but I'm still impressed that matriculant GPAs are at 3.51/3.43. Darklabel is right in that its not particularly meaningful because of grade replacement, but still I doubt that grade replacement would affect the mean by more than maybe .2-.25.

This makes me feel good that I got in last cycle, because this one is probably going to be just as if not more competitive.

Its no surprise that 3/4 of DO applicants either also applied to or previously applied to MD schools. The separation and "difference in philosophy" has been quite meaningless for some time now.

EDIT: I got bored and looked through the files AACOM has for this data:

2013:
Applicants: 3.44/3.34/25.90
Matriculants: (randomly projected by me 🙂) 3.51/3.43/27

2012:
Applicants: 3.44/3.34/25.73
Matriculants: 3.51/3.43/26.85

2011:
Applicants: 3.41/3.26/25.66
Matriculants: 3.50/3.43/26.51

2010:
Applicants: 3.43/3.32/25.63
Matriculants: 3.49/3.41/26.48

2009:
Applicants: 3.42/3.31/25.50
Matriculants: 3.49/3.41/26.19

2008:
Applicants: ???
Matriculants: ~3.47/~3.36/26.12
