Ok. I've looked at the 2014 official Step 1 thread and everyone did amazing because they are badass, congratulations. But I was predicted to score >240 on Step 1 and scored a 225. This happened to majority of the people I've talked to but I didn't know if my pool of people were bias. Did this happen to other persons/schools who took the exam in 2014?

Happens every test; some people score higher, some people score lower, and some people score what they are "supposed to". Myself and two classmates scored higher, lots scored on their predicted value, and I know a few that scored 5-10 points lower.

Sorry 🙁

I'm in a similar situation as the original poster except my actual was even more of a discrepancy from my predicted and uworld average. Is it worth trying a rescore I really do think it's wrong, which is probably pure emotion but it really does seem wrong especially when i factored in how I felt coming out.

Doubt it would be worth the expense. I imagine they take great care in grading these things. I know something can happen but probably not. Just move on and upward.

Even if it popped up some strange message when you submitted your exam? (actually happened)

Should have asked someone at the testing center if that would affect your score. I know if I saw something weird after my exam that would be the first thing I would ask. What did the strange message say?

What did the message say? Everyone gets an ending screen that just confirms that you sat for the exam, and something about how it doesn't confirm that you completed every section. Did you get an error message or something? If so, as JDUB said, you should have reported it when you were signing out of the testing center for the last time.

It was an error message. Popped up and before I could call someone in it cleared. I figured it probably was a bug that worked itself out. I really can't remember what it said. I'm gonna shell out the 65 bucks to have it regraded. When I get my score back in a month I'll post it. Not getting my hopes too high though.

Or should I call the testing center and ask them to check their logs?

If it's lower and you laugh, don't feel bad. lol

Yeah you are right. I just need to forget about it. One of my study partners got a close grade to mine. So it's just that I suck. Lol. no regrade necessary. Thanks

How does the regrade work? Do you get to keep the highest score out of the two or do you get what you get on the regrade?

i think you get the regrade

This would make the most sense since a score adjustment is an admission there was a mistake the first time around. Whether or not the mistake favored you, it has to be rectified. In any case, NBME says a score change is a very remote possibility.

Longtime lurker but figured it'd be best to not create another thread

I also scored significantly lower than my practice tests

I'm dead at the averages or a few points above or below on some of the specialties I was looking at (Anesthesia, Internal Med, EM). I am from Boston and wanted to stay in the city. Can I pretty much eliminate any of the harvard associated programs? Do I still have a shot at other programs like BU?

Don't underestimate the power of networking. If you currently live in the city it gives you the ability to form relationships with people running the program. You ever notice on those charts there always 1 person with a 200 get a competitive residency? Connections!

Average makes you competitive for a spot.

Do you go to a school in or around the Boston area? From talking with residency directors and senior faculty at my institution, the sense I got from them is that they prefer known factors. They tell me that they like taking students from programs that they've had good experience with and students that are perceived to be "low risk". The low risk could be due to a variety of factors like coming from an institution that has a good track record of sending competent students, or students from the home institution, or students that did away rotations at my home institution and subsequently applied here, or even students with good references from faculty elsewhere that the director is familiar with or knows personally/professionally. At the end of the day, I would imagine institutions are looking for competent doctors or trainees. You can show it in many ways and scores are just one of those.
