Looking through the list, I’m surprised by how many good, accredited sites are in PMV. Does anyone know what’s up with Wellspan’s HUGE internship class, though?

“WellSpan Philhaven CBT is an APA accredited internship seeking to fill 13 additional positions to the 11 positions already filled.”

I posted this on the Phase II thread but thought I would share it here too. I know not matching in either phase is probably disheartening but I have a friend who had to enter PMV and she ended up loving her internship site. She also ended up at a competitive postdoc at a top notch institution in an awesome city.

I interviewed there, they basically just have a mill of interns practicing like staff psychs for 20% of the cost. When I asked what they were looking for in an intern they said "independence" which summarized everything they said pretty well. They stressed that supervision/instruction were more of "as needed/available" than something to structure your practice around. The current interns were also pretty clear that they basically made their own schedule, including what groups to run how/when/etc. I think I ranked them last.

I interviewed there twice (once in Phase II and again the next year in Phase I) and got the same sense. If memory serves, the number of slots doubled from one year to the next but the number of supervising psychologists did not change. This is also the site I previously mentioned that required an on-site interview for Phase II (5 years ago).

I interviewed there when they were just Wellspan. At the time they seemed to have a mismatch between the experiences they wanted their interns to have and what their internship actually included. They seemed to seek out applicants with experience in health psychology, but the internship didn't really have any health psychology opportunities and was almost entirely outpatient mental health.

Incidentally I'm someone who matched in PMVS...it was not a fun experience, to say the least (I literally matched so late that I went to the first meeting at school for the next year's application cycle). That said I honestly did end up at an internship that was a great fit for me, and got a great post-doc as well.

I really appreciate when people share such experiences. It helps alleviate my anxiety. 🙂

Anybody knows anything about Valley Behavioral Health-PIC in Utah?
