Just a few things I would like to know.

1. Are there members of Admissions committees that check out this website?
2. If there are, will they own up and be like "hey, I'm the dean of...."
3. So why do people come up with threads like, "What are my chances...."
4. Do we know exactly what a school is looking for when they size up an applicant?
5. Are there people with awesome grades that still dont get accepted because of bad 'people skills?'
6. Are there people with OK grades that get accepted because ADCOMS saw something else they liked in the student? (6.5) 😀 So why do people keep worrying?
7. Why cant people objectively research the schools they want to go to and decide without bashing other people's choices?
8. Many people say, "Oh, that schools sucks!" Honestly, how many people who were rejected last year would turn down an acceptance from those same schools if they had the opportunity?
9. Do patients really care where you went to school?
10. Why can't people get it straight that there is a reason why Dental schools are not rated?
11.Why can't people understand that a school that may be great for me might be horrible for you?
12. Why can't I sign my Dental school loan without a cosigner, after all, I have great credit too? ( 😀 This is just a whine 😀 )
13.Dentistry is about patients too you know. Why is it so difficult to find a thread about patient welfare and how we want to touch lives (remember your personal statement) Aren't the patients the primary focus of our careers?
14. Why would anyone apply to 35-54 schools? You know DARN well, you cant attend even half of the interview they may call you for.
15. Why don't they (whoever that is) move December 1st to February 1st or something? Everything's Kinda late this year. 😀
16. Why is AADSAS so SLOW?
17. Why did we pay loads of money to be treated like rubbish by AADSAS?
18. Is someone toying with AADSAS' website, the dates for my application mailouts kinda change from day to day! 😀
19. Why am I suffering from a serious case of senioritis? I dont even feel like getting up in the morning for classes.
20. Will I have anything left in my savings by the time this application process is over?
21. Why do I feel like December 1st is Christmas day? 😀

very creative way of venting. I feel the same way. I sat on my mailman's lap and asked him for an acceptance letter on December 1st...Christmas day.

some very good questions ... too bad I can't answer any!!

I wish you wouldn't have said that mr. corolla because if your from AF there is a good chance that your mailman is my dad. does he drive around a white jeep?

1. Are there members of Admissions committees that check out this website?
Sure, why not?

2. If there are, will they own up and be like "hey, I'm the dean of...."
That would make too much sense.

3. So why do people come up with threads like, "What are my chances...."
Because people like to brag.... I really like the... "Hey, I have a 3.8GPA and a 26DAT, I am worried I am not going to make it!"

4. Do we know exactly what a school is looking for when they size up an applicant?
Well, we know this answer to the "size up" question now, don't we?

5. Are there people with awesome grades that still dont get accepted because of bad 'people skills?'
100% You don't get good grades out getting boozed up at the bar working on people skills. (wish I knew this earlier).

6. Are there people with OK grades that get accepted because ADCOMS saw something else they liked in the student? (6.5) So why do people keep worrying?
Don't know.... But the bar can curb those "worry" issues.

7. Why cant people objectively research the schools they want to go to and decide without bashing other people's choices?
Because that is no fun.... Hey you, that guy over there... YOU SUCK!... Man I feel better

8. Many people say, "Oh, that schools sucks!" Honestly, how many people who were rejected last year would turn down an acceptance from those same schools if they had the opportunity?
Damn that is a good one.

9. Do patients really care where you went to school?
Nope, I know a Dentist that keeps his degree in a closet... He went to Emory.

10. Why can't people get it straight that there is a reason why Dental schools are not rated?
They are not rated?

11.Why can't people understand that a school that may be great for me might be horrible for you?
School only sucks for people with bad grades.... It's like poker, You aint happy unless you are winning

12. Why can't I sign my Dental school loan without a cosigner, after all, I have great credit too? ( This is just a whine ).
Cause you are gonna be BROKE.

13.Dentistry is about patients too you know. Why is it so difficult to find a thread about patient welfare and how we want to touch lives (remember your personal statement) Aren't the patients the primary focus of our careers?
What, this is a erroneous statement... Dentistry has nothing to do with people. Wanting to touch people... well, well... that's just sick.

14. Why would anyone apply to 35-54 schools? You know DARN well, you cant attend even half of the interview they may call you for.
Applying to Harvard and Howard??? Now that's just stupid.

15. Why don't they (whoever that is) move December 1st to February 1st or something? Everything's Kinda late this year.
What??? AADSAS runs like a finely tuned machine.

16. Why is AADSAS so SLOW?
See 15

17. Why did we pay loads of money to be treated like rubbish by AADSAS?
It is a soft core S&M opperation. You have to pay extra for the "Adult" portion of the AADSAS website... only $70 a mo.

18. Is someone toying with AADSAS' website, the dates for my application mailouts kinda change from day to day!
Its great to be God.... Ask him, he'll tell you...

19. Why am I suffering from a serious case of senioritis? I dont even feel like getting up in the morning for classes.
Apparently they make a drug for that now.

20. Will I have anything left in my savings by the time this application process is over?
Nope.

21. Why do I feel like December 1st is Christmas day?
Its not?

LOL! 😀
Yes as a matter of fact he does, but he is quite young. All my AADSAS stuff was put to a PO Box though, so I never see who delivers...

     SuperC you're hilarious! Now why am I not surprised that you'd be the one to come up with smart-ass responses huh? 😀

I can't say for sure about dental schools but last week there was an admissions counselor for USF Medical School that came and gave a presentation at my school. During his presentation he mentioned "SDN" assuming that people knew what he was talking about. When he got to the interview part of the presentation he told everyone to "go to SDN - studentdoctor.net to get feedback on how the interview at different schools is."

So if they know, i'm sure many other schools are well aware of this site as well.

It was a solid team effort!!!

Here are some answers to your many questions:

#1. Yes, almost all adcoms are aware of SDN and are very curious to know what applicants have to say about certain programs and the admissions program. Many of them frequently lurk in these forums - meaning they are here but they don't post. For example, Corky Cacas is very much aware that she has been called the "Ice Princess" in the interview feedback section (she really is a nice a person and shudders when she thinks of that label). Something else to keep in mind is that adcoms from different schools also talk to each other. Many of them have been doing this for years and know each other quite well. Will they discriminate against you for what you post on this site? Who knows, but how people act in an anonymous forum is usually a pretty good indicator of what they are like in private versus a public stage.

Yes, there are people that are rejected that have good grades but lack people skills. I have been told stories about applicants that refused to make eye contact, for example, or seemed very conceeded or aloof and this sank their chances to zero at the school (e.g. Penn and Case). Those teeth you are going to be working on come with a complimentary human attached to them. Interpersonal skills will go a LONG way in calming patients down and building trust, educating them about the procedure, their oral health, and on and on. Don't underestimate the power that your personality will have on your practice, your patients, and their perception of you and your abilities.

If your loan requires a cosigner it means your credit score is low enough (either through mis-management of funds, such as a history of late payments, or simply a lack of credit, meaning you don't have a tangible history of funds and loan management that a bank can observe and assess) that the bank requires another person to guarantee payments on that loan. This cosigner must be credit worthy as well.

**** For those of you reading this post and will be applying to dental school in the future and don't have a credit history, I urge you to build it up. Having no credit history is the same as bad credit: if a bank does not have a tangible history they can look at they err on the side of caution and deem you a credit risk. The best way to build up your credit is to open up a credit card. Make some purchases and pay them off. If you do carry a balance make sure you make timely payments and NEVER be late on them, and keep this initial credit card open. Besides showing regular payment history, the longer a credit card is open the more of a track record you establish and the more it builds your credit. As soon as you close it it stops contributing to your active credit history and FICO scores. These scores and history are what banks look at when you are applying for any kind of loan. Credit is not so much an issue with government loans as those that come from private lenders, such as CitiBank (aka CitiAssist), that use your scores to determine not only if you qualify but at what rate. Credit will also come into play when you leave dental school and (if you need to) eventually apply for loans to purchase a practice, a home, and so on. Thus it is really important to start to think ahead about these things and be proactive when it comes to your credit and your future.***

Will you have any money? That all depends on how many interviews you attend. Airfare, hotel, food, and transportation really, really adds up quick.

Or if you are an INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, good credit or not. 🙂

Thanks Sprgrover.

Oh yea, that too. The reason for that of course is that as a non-US citizen a bank would not have much legal recourse should you default. A U.S. citizen cosigner means that they could go after that cosigner, should you default for whatever reason, within the U.S. legal system.
