Hi all,
I just got my MCAT scores and I need your advice. I got a 7 PS, 8 BS, and 9 VR with an R in writing. I have a 3.23 GPA and I plan on retaking the MCAT in Sept. What are my chances at a US medical school? Or what advice do you have for a premed like me?

Apply DO and caribbean, unless you live in one of those states that has a state school with pretty low standards like Mississippi or North Dakota.

If you have a state school that has an average of 27-28, it would be worth a try. I know my state school who has a 28 average, accepted someone with a 20 MCAT, but everything else on their application was stellar.

You need to talk to your school's pre med advisor.

I think you probably already know that you should wait to apply until you have a better MCAT score >27 if you want to apply to US MD programs.

It would also help you to wait a year and do some GPA repair. A year of straight As, including some upper-level science, would do wonders for you in terms of reassuring adcomms you'd survive their tough science-intense curriculum.

If you're going to be weak in numbers, you'd do well to have stronger ECs than everyone else. Be sure your clinical experience, shadowing, nonmedical community service, leadership, teaching, and research are as stellar as you can make them.

You're going to need to sit out this cycle. Spend some time studying for the mcat ( recommend going to the mcat prep section) and repairing your gpa. However if you've graduated or are near graduating ( 100 credits +) it'll be difficult to raise your gpa. In this case you've probably got a few routes. You could do grade retakes for DO ( probably 3-4 retakes of C's or lower will be enough, so it'll barely take anytime) or for MD you could consider a post-bacc ( a 3.8+ in one shows you're capable) or SMP ( costs a lot but with a 3.7+ you could get in to an MD school).

Good luck.
